1st #humansconf Virtual Open Space
June 2, 2020 @ 19:00 - 22:00 CEST
An event, that happened fully online.
Theme Of The Open Space
People & their interactions
Anything about people and how they interact. Ranging from ways to collaborate that foster empathy and insight, strategies for establishing sustainable pace and avoiding burnout, to tips on how to practice closeness when you’re working in a remote team. Bring your challenges, your questions, your strategies, failures, successes and stories.
How it went
Now that our first event has happened (and hopefully one of many) we, the organizing team, can share that we really enjoyed ourselves during the event and are quite happy with the whole experience. For this, we can only thank you, the participants, because you made this event awesome for yourselves and for the others. Thank you ??
We started this journey last year with the target to host an open space unconf next to Aschaffenburg. Due to reasons you all are aware of, sadly, we decided to postpone till next year. At the same time we did not want to give up on organizing something, hence the idea for an open space. Digital open space is a completely different environment with a different set of challenges, and of course benefits. We can say that planning was fun and we definitely learned throughout the process.
The event started with more than 50 lovely people joining in the main room and saying hello. Benjamin, our facilitator for the evening, greeted everyone, presented the concept behind this event (what is an open space and the rules), mentioned the code of conduct. After this short intro we split up into smaller groups and joined breakout rooms to share “What feelings or needs are you bringing to the event today?” and “What were or are your biggest challenges for today?” with each other. This part turned out to be a bit short to really let everyone speak (something we’ll surely change for future events), still it helped set a humane tone for the event. After two rounds of sharing our answers and views with each other, the marketplace, the place for co-creating the agenda, started.
There were already some topics present on the agenda. The session hosts, those who had added sessions to the agenda already, started to briefly present the topic they wanted to talk about, discuss or learn from others, very much as it’s common at in-person Open Spaces. During this time others started to fill the still empty slots in the agenda and took turns describing them. At the end of it we had a full schedule, ten different sessions distributed across two time slots and five rooms … how awesome is that! 😍
Sessions started, and people left the main room. It was fun to notice the concept of butterflies exists also in online open spaces. After all sessions ended, we again convened in the main room. We jointly reflected on the sessions and what we each take away from the event. Everyone seemed tired, yet energized and in a good mood.
It was great to see the session hosts harvesting notes from their session directly on the board with the agenda.
Several participants also shared their notes and experiences on twitter.
One of my favorite words is connection. This is what I felt this evening attending #humansconf @humansconf - we spoke, listened, learned, and taught. We grew. And all while talking about what matters the most - people. Tired, yet so grateful. Thank you all! ❤️

Thank you so much @humansconf (organizers and attendees) for this wonderful #OpenSpace. I had an amazing time and I grew as a person, felt like I connected with people and I can now go to bed with lots to think about. #humansConf These are my scruffy sketch notes :) pic.twitter.com/AjV04Nd9AV

All in all, we, the organizers, are very thankful! For all of you joining us on our journey, showing up and sharing, creating lots of human connections along the way.
We are very much looking forward to the next event. Stay tuned. 🙂
